Dual Boot and GRUB Hangs.

I have seen similar questions asked all over various forums and sites, but I cannot find an answer that will work for me.

I have two 40GB IDE HDDs in my system.

One (primary master) 40gb Maxtor with XP loaded on it.

One (primary slave) 40gb WD with Fedora Core 6 loaded on it.

I DID NOT install GRUB to the MBR of the master drive for fear of corrupting my XP install, and because someone told me I didn't have to.
Rather I found instructions on editing the NTLDR to be able to access the NT Boot Menu and also use "bootpart" to capture the boot partition of the Linux drive so NTLDR can use it.

I thought until I got everything set up, I could just choose in the BIOS the drive to boot to first (IDE0 or IDE1).

XP boots fine, but when I change the BIOS to boot from IDE1 (Fedora) it hangs very early in the boot process.

At the point where it hangs, there is a Black Screen with GRUB _ in the top left corner.  This is not a prompt, as you cannot type in anything, and I must reset the PC to reboot.

is there something I havenot done?  Is there a better way to dual boot off of two seperate HDDs?

thanks in advance,
woody
