Video Problem

When I boot up my PC it goes through all the POST stuff fine, but when it gets to the windows loading screen (XP home) with the green flashing bar the monitor suddenly goes blank. Yet if I leave it on, I can hear windows starting from my speakers. I can also control it in this mode to shut it down by pressing "windows key + u + u". But obviously having no video output is a problem. I've tried starting in safe mode but before it gives me a chance to scroll up / down to the safe mode option, it goes black anyway. I think I managed to get to the safe mode option once and it didn't help - although obviously due to the nature of the problem I'm not entirely sure if I did or didn't. I'm guessing it's a graphics card problem, either software or the card itself - but if there's something wrong with the card why would it even bother to display the windows loading screen correctly? Any Idea or suggestions?
