Update.exe errors on trying to install Win XP Service Pack 2

Hi.
I have tried installing Windows XP Service Pack 2 both by download and from the Microsoft SP2 CD. In both cases I get the following string of errors generated. The installation gets through to a point where it reports "Performing Clean Up". At this point it stops with the following errors/messages:
AppName: update.exe
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180
AppVer: 5.5.1005.0
ModName:ntdll.dll
Offset: 000029116

How can I get the installation to complete?

start - run - sfc /scannow
hopefully this will replace the ntdll.dll with a good file that isn't corrupted.

Hi
Many thanks for the information. I've taken a look at the link in your comment but I'm afraid I don't see how the Microsoft Article relates to the circumstances of the issue which I am experiencing. Could someone explain in a bit more detail. Sorry to be a pain.

I don't mind getting a C grade, however if you'd needed more assistance or clarification, then you should've posted back.  Kindly explain if my researched link was able to help you or at least point the way.  If the latter, plz include what eventually did resolve it for you, thx.
