MAXTOR EXTERNAL 250GB HARD DRIVE MODEL: 6L250R0, 'cannot access drive 'J' The File or directory is corrupted and unreadable'

I have a Maxtor External Hard Drive Model 6L250R0.  It has been fine until recently. When I tried to access it the message 'cannot access drive 'J' The File or directory is corrupted and unreadable' appeared and has done so for the last 3 days.  It powers up but when I access the properties of it it says 0 bytes free, 0 bytes used but when i troubleshoot it says that the device is working properly.  I have downloaded the free demo GET DATA BACK but to be honest I don't have a clue how to use it.  The Hard Drive was virtually at full capacity, I really cannot afford to lose this data........................

Thanks for your response.  I am using it with a sony vaio laptop, can i do wot u suggested with a laptop?
This will need to be done on a desktop PC.

There are also places that will get your data for a price. I would first try the get data back software.
I will look into some FREE software for you as well
Imminent or after the fact disk failure is the worst kind of PC experience, especially if your data is not backed up.  In these conditions, you may want to turn straight to commercial solutions.  This is fine, but if you have time to spare, want to save some money, and don't mind experimenting, there is some good freeware.  Understandably, it's not for everyone.  A good place to start for freeware is the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows.  I would suggest going straight to the tool list and picking out which one is good for your situation.

This is a bootable CD with lots of tools I use it often.

Good luck.

Hmmm...
Let me guess ,the Maxtor One Touch series ,right?

Not a good product.

If the disk is physically bad,you may need to send it out for repairs.

If it does spin up,can you see it in disk administrator?

The Maxtors do have their own drivers available from the Maxtor(now Seagate) site.

You could try one of those, but

You may have do reinitilize the the disk and then recover the partition using Getback data.

The kicker being is that you must recover the data from that hard drive to another drive of the same storage capicity.

You need to make sure you have the correct version of GetBack (FAT or NTFS)

You might be using FAT32 on the Maxtor ,so it may be trial and error.
After using Get Back Data NFTS it now says 'J is non accessible; the parameter is incorrect'? The Get BAck Data says ' Found File System; NTFS at sector 63, cluster size 8 (234GB), All my files can now be seen in the recovery tree; I've managed to open a few but because I have the demo version I can't recover them. Does this mean I have to purchase the licenced copy and find another 250GB hard drive to copy to? Also once this action is complete, if I format the faulty hard drive will this hard drive be ok to re-transfer my data?

Thanks for all your responses.
>>  Does this mean I have to purchase the licenced copy  <<  Yes
>>  and find another 250GB hard drive to copy to?  <<  well, you need some space to copy it to.
and here some free recovery programs, try them, if they work, ok - if not buy GetDataBack
My appologies to all, I've pressed the 'accept' button when I still have the problem, please continue to submit possible solutions.  Many Thanks, Milly605

Yes, to recover the data they would like to be paid for the software.
The demo just allows you to see what they can possibly recover AFTER purchase.
