I'm new on this area of secure transfers.

My business clients are now using common WSFTP to connect to my server to tranfer files to it, but now they expect from me to implement a secure way to send this files to my server. This has to be done using software solutions. I have heard about VPN, SSL, SSH, SFTP, but I dont know how to setup all the parts of the entire process... do I need to buy a SSL certificate?.. what software do I need to buy?... Does my clients need the same software than me?... etc... I need to know how to setup both, my server and my clients software in order to have this done. My server uses MS Windows Server 2003 for Small Business. I will appreciate any help.
