Problems connecting to FTP server behind Linksys router
Hello,
I am having a problem connecting from the outside to my FTP server. THis is the first time I am trying to connect. This is probably due to my lack of understanding. Here is my info
I have Windows 2000 pro, connect to broadband with a Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54G router. I am using the Free FTP Software called GuildFTPd, which I am assuming is the more popular one.
I set the guildftp to detect my ip address. I also added on my router under application & gaming /port range forward the ports of 20000 to 20020 for my ip address. I don't know what else to change on my router side.
Note, I can log in through the LAN, but not remotely from the outside.
Any ideas would help. Thanks
Danny

Thanks,
I have set up a static IP Address in the FTP Server options to my IP address like 66.47.147.12 and I guess this is where I don't know how, but on my router where and how do I set up forward ports. I did setup a range of 20 to 22 and both UDP and TCP with my local IP address which is 194.100.....etc
Slightly confused
Thanks

THanks I will try this when i get home.
just to make sure, I will enter the name of the App, enter the start port (20) and end (22) for example and the IP of the local PC, which would be something like 194.168.0.104. Correct? On the FTP Server Application would I enter my external IP address like 66.47.147.12 or my local IP 194.168.0.104?
Thanks again
Danny

Correct.
On the external FTP client, to get to the FTP server, you would enter the external IP.

... also possible the ISP is blocking FTP servers. (Incoming FTP traffic to their customers).
If above suggestions fail - contact your ISP tech support and ask them if inbound FTP is allowed for your level of account. The ISP may be blocking inbound traffic on the FTP ports. Only thing you would see is above, failure to connect remotely.

Hi, that is the message I got before is failure to connect remotely. But I remember a long time before I got a router, I was able to connect an FTP Server. But once I got a router, I was unable to connect.
Thanks
Danny
Thanks

OK... sounds like a router, some suggestion (sorry about duplicating above)...
1) Ensure router is set up to allow remote access, some require you to setup permissions (specific IP to let in, etc).
....... Use your best judgement regarding the external IPs to enter into the router.
2) Per above, Specify IP forwarding on your local LAN to a static IP on your FTP server.
3) Also, since running XP Pro -- check the native firewall and allow ports above 20 - 22 through the firewall on the FTP server.
4) Ditto #3 on any additional firewalls you are running (zone alarm, etc).

Ok, I got it to work, apparently dummy me, I did not see that I had the wrong internal IP address of the computer that the application resides on. pseudocyber lead me to this insight. Thank you so much. Really appreciate everyones help

Glad you got it working. :)
Then, in your router, forward ports 20 and 21 to the static IP.
