Troubleshooting problems with a WMV

I'm trying to edit a wmv file created by gotoMeeting.com and am bumping up against what I assume are mangled codecs at some point or other. The movie plays fine in media player but every editor i've tried to work with blows up one way or another. I can load to both Virtual Dub and MS's Movie Maker but saving/outputting will lock them both up.

GSpot tells me Render OK:

SRC A DMO:WMV Screen decoder DMO B Video Renderer
SCR A DMO WMAudio Decoder DMO B AC3Filter C Default DirectSound Device.

When I ask GSpot about Filter loaded on my system I has these lines flagged as error:
ACM      Base            msacm.avis            ** Missing file: ffvfw.dll
REND      Video      {2206C458-1E6B-4D65-B0F7-A74EEE8496B6}      {2206C458-1E6B-4D65-B0F7-A74EEE8496B6}      0x00800000      ** File Missing:

Any clues as to the source of my problem there?

i would first try to re-encode the wmv file to an AVI first

ASKER

That's where i'm getting a hung application.
Hi,

Try using this version of VirtualDub:

http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=Virtualdub_1.4c-ASF

More recent versions have limitations in WMV editing.

Or GraphEdit (http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=GraphEdit). I've used it once, but it's kinda complicated when you just want to convert a file.
