Cisco 7940 Phones not receiving power via ethernet
I have just put in some new network drops that I thought were done correctly, however when I plug my Cisco 7940 phones into these network drops they do not receive power. I have verified that data comes through them just fine. I have plenty of other phones in the officer that are receiving power from the switch just fine but in the new network drops they won't. I can take the phone and plug it directly into the switch on the same port and it will power on, therefore I think it must be something wrong with the cable/connection/drop but I can't figure out what it is. It seems to be wired exactly the same as the ones that have worked previously and it is Cat5e cable like the rest of them. Does anyone have any ideas of what I could do to effectively troubleshoot and resolve this problem?

I think that cisco requires a cisco poe switch and not a third party... try plugging it in directly to the poe switch with a patch cable...

It is a Cisco POE switch and I have done that. When plugging the phone directly into the switch it works just fine.

It looks like the guys who did my drops messed up terminating the ends and the Cisco switch was mostly smart enough to fix the problem. They crossed over the cables because they didn't know what they were doing and the Cisco switch was smart enough to recross them over for data purposes but was not capable of doing this for power purposes. I used a cross over cable to go from my wall jack to my phones and now they power up just fine.

I'd insist that they come back and fix them all. Over time, you may forget which ones are which and the person that comes in after you will have a very hard time with some jacks this way and some jacks the other way..
