Security with Applets in ASP.NET

Problem:  We have a Web Site that can be accessed directly inside our company and by outside users.  The authentication for both inside and outside is simply their normal Windows/Network logon usernames and passwords (we provide non-company users with usernames and passwords that actually set them up as normal users on our network).  Part of our application is an image viewer in the form of a java applet which opens in a new window when a user selects a link.  Normally, there is no problem opening the Java Applet window in or out of the office.  However, for several outside/non-company users, they receive a second authentican/login box that looks somewhat like:

-----------------------------------------------
Password Needed - Networking

    Server:       /(ip address of server)
    Scheme:     ntlm

    User name:  ______________
    Password:    ______________
    Domain:      ______________

      [Yes]  [No]
-------------------------------------------------

Highly annoying for many of our high-maintenance users and we cannot seem to find the cause.  Does anyone have any ideas?
