Are there issues in upgrading SWIG on RedHat Enterprise 4?

I'm trying to install a script which uses SWIG on my webserver (RedHat E4).   The script instructions state minimum requirement is SWIG 1.3.27 or later but my web host says they can't support higher than version 1.3.21, the version that comes with RHE4 and if the later version is installed they can't be responsible for any update and security issues that result or even break the updated install of SWIG .....

So if I did update it, how likely is it to cause problems?   Is it a non-issue or not?

I tried installing the script with the lower SWIG version and I get lots of errors so I presume an upgrade is my only option.

Any answers or suggestions appreciated.

Thanks for that.  The different directory idea is an interesting one.   I'll see if anyone on the SWIG mailing list would advise the same.
