Can't open www.hotmail.com

Hi, Got a laptop with XP home edition, running IE6 that will allow you to open www.hotmail.com, but one you enter the username and password, it redirects to login.live.com in the usual way, but shows page cannot be displyed. All other web sites work OK

What i have done:

Cleared Cache & Cookies & contents of %TEMP% Directory
System Restore to the earliest point
Ran Spybot S&D, and adaware se personal fixed any problems found
Full AV check with bit defender
System restore point created at this point
Installed Firefox 2.0 but that will not locate the internet.
Upgraded to IE7, and that would not get on the internet, so restored back to the previous restore point from 2 steps above.

Here is the log from HIJACK this...

Greetings, j4jack !

The login page for Hotmail is now http://login.live.com

Since you cannot connect with IE7 nor Firefox, run this script to fix your connection
http://downloads.subratam.org/WinsockFix.zip

Your HijackThis log looks OK. If you did not install the following items, have HJT remove them.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://format.packardbell.com/cgi-bin/redirect/?country=UK&range=AD&phase=6&key= SEARCH

O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=file://C:\APPS\IE\offline\uk.htm

Best wishes!

Also check,
IE > Help > About Internet Explorer and look at the Cipher Strength. It should be 128 bit. If the Cipher Strength is anything less then 128-bit, download and install the Internet Explorer High Encryption Pack.

Uncheck the box for Enable Third Party Browser Extensions in the Advanced Section (all other settings in Advanced Section are set to Default).  Click Apply and close and open IE

Configure Security settings for the Trusted sites zone in IE: IE, Tools, Internet Options, Security tab, select Trusted sites, Default Level. Sites, enter the address (URL) of the hotmail site in the Add this Web site to the zone: box, Add, OK, Apply.

Tried all of the above, still nothing,...trying the system file checker now.....might re-install! GRRRRRR
j4jack,

1. Clear your DNS cache.  Go to Start > Run and type CMD
and hit OK.
At the command prompt, type ipconfig /flushDNS
and hit OK.

2. If no joy, check if your PC is blocking the site.  Do a search for HOSTS file and open it with an editor like Notepad. Delete any line that has the blocked site in it.

HOSTS file is located in
Windows XP      =      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2K     =     C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Win 98/ME     =     C:\WINDOWS

It is a hidden file. Go to any folder and select Tools > Folders Options > View. Check "Show hidden files and folders". Click OK.

3. If you are using Internet Explorer, check if the site is restricted or blocked.  Go to Tools > Internet Options > Security. Hightlight Restricted Sites and see if the blocked site is located there.

Also under Content tab > Content Advisor, check if the site is restricted there. Remove it.

turns out the pc had norton internet security installed by the manufacturer, and this had been disabled using msconfig. I could not remove using add/remove programs because was not present...in the end i used the Norton removal tool NRT.exe to remove it, all worked ok straight afterwards

Gonna split points!

Thanks for your help :)
Glad to hear you found and fixed the problem, good job!

Thank you also for giving us the points, so kind of you.

Thanks!
Just as an FYI, I had this problem not to long ago with a new workstation I setup using Mcafee provided by comcast.  No matter what I did I couldn't get the thing to work.   I even uninstalled Mcafee.  I finally reinstalled the entire OS
I am having exactly the same problem at the moment, followed all advice but still having the same problem on 2 PC's and 1 laptop running off same DSL.

Sometimes on the laptop it lets me but other times it doesnt!!!!

All PC's run different firewalls and anti-virus software so I have no idea what the problem is.
Worked out my problem by luck to be honest!!!

Went to network connections, right click LAN Properties, Advanced, firewall settings, advanced. Clicked LAN then LAN settings and checked the box with HTTPS and apply, OK and hotmail and facebook have worked fine since.
Great.
I cannot login to any password required sites on IE7 or email accounts. Is there a fix?
Go and open CMD.

Type

Ipconfig /dnsflush

Now do

Ipconfig /displaydns

Make sure IE/FF are closed, as it will NOT work with them open.
check the HOST file make sure its not blocked there.
Thanks guys, this was informative
