How to update a MySQL database via PHP

I'm sure I'm missing something fundamental here but hope someone can help me.

I have an local application developed in VB.NET where product codes are maintained.  The application uses an access database in the background.

I would like to be able to update product code information to a MySQL database that is provided by my ISP, unfortunately I do not have direct access to the database from my client.

I have created a small PHP script that reads a url that I pass to it and updates the MySQL database based upon this information.  The problem I have found is that the URL cannot be longer than 1,000 characters.  I would like to be able to do the following things,

- update the online database in really time
- ensure that the method is secure  (probably via HTTPS)
- relatively simple

Any advice or direction would be much appreciated.
