Can't Install USB Controller drivers (devices).

On Win XP (sp2), fully patched.
Because I could not get a new flash drive to work, I uninstalled
all of the USB controller devices drivers.
Now I can't get them back.

I have an Asus PTGD1-LA, Intel chipset 915G
Northbridge -   i915G graphics and memory controller hub.
Souhtbridge -  ICH6 Intel I/O controller Hub 5

I have tried installing the latest drivers from Intel,
but all I get is.

"There was a problem installing this hardware
Universal Serial Bus (USB) controller
The driver installation file for this device is missing a necessary entry."

I have pointed the hardware wizard to the internet and to my hard drive.
I still get the same  message.

Any Help would be appreciated.

Thank You

That is strange. The native XP drivers should be able to handle your USB devices.

You might want to download CCleaner (www.ccleaner.com) and run the 'Issues' function.
It will clean out any left over junk in your registry and give you a clean start.

Good Luck,
Vic

ASKER

Thank You for your suggestion,
I have ccleaner  and I have already run it.

You ran the 'Issues' function and it didn't help?
You posted this question on USENET too I see :)  Try removing the devices and then reboot, then let XP redetect them.  This seems to work in special cases.
Lastly- DId you downlad the latest ASUS BIOS and USB drivers ?

I hope this helps !

i would re-install the chipset drivers first - look on the motherboard cd, or look them up on the asus Site.
BTW - that model is unknown on the asus site
Merete had some great suggestions for you.
Which one did you use for the actual fix?
I did a reinstallation of Windows, the repair installation, that fixed it.

:) glad it worked
