Exchange 2003 Enterprise - Unable to perform Offline Degrag of non contiguously named .edb and .stm files.
I've recently inherited an exchange 2003 enterprise server. There are 4 information stores, 3 of which have non standard names for the .edb and .stm files. The first information store has the normally named priv1.edb and priv1.stm files. The 3 other information stores have the .edb and .stm files named as such. Mailbox Store 2.edb, Mailbox Store 3.edb, and Mailbox Store 4.edb. Using the ESEUTIL I was able to easily perform the offline defrag of the priv1 edb and stm files. However when attempting to perform the offline degrag of the 3 other stores I recieve an error.
Has anyone come across this naming convention of the stores?

you try to include double quotes in the path to the edb file like "c:\program files\exchsrvr\data\mailbo x store 2.edb" and run the command. I believe the space between the file name could be the problem.

I had tried the "quotes" without any luck. And yes the space between the names is what seems to be the issue.
REname one of them and see if u are successfull(call MS first to confirm)....once finished, rename it back to original...
Slightly deviating from the question, but is there a reason you are doing an offline defrag?

The reason i'm performing an offline defrag is to increase performance and to reclaim some disk space for Exchange.

>Exchange does offline defrags each night to keep it optimal !!!!
Exchange is performing Online Maintenance every midnight - it includes online defragment. When it starts event ID 700 will be looged in Application log & at then end 701. Event ID 1221 will give u summary how much space is marked free.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256352/en-us
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324358/en-us
When u delete the data from mailbox; content is deleted but Online Defrag marks it as white space. When we run offline defarg (by dismounting the store) such white spaces are discarded.
Also before running offline defrag u can execute C:\>eseutil /ms "Database Name" to know how much free space can be converted. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/195914/en-us
brizk71,
Can u pls paste the entire command & error message - command u are entering for offline defrag; including path from where you are executing the command & get error message. As "cjtraman" said; when database name has spaces it will fail - reason MS DOS.
The best way is --- D:\Exchsrvr\Bin\>eseutil /d "database path"
If your database size is 10 GB; then D: must have 11-12 GB free space.

That was a typo - I obviously meant that Exchange does ONLINE defrags every night.

Haven't had a chance to try the rename as of yet. This is a 24/7 environement and can only take down the stores when scheduled. We will be trying a rename this weekend. I'll keep you posted. Just as a point of interest i've done a rename with a public folder store which worked.
