Client DNS changes

Hi,

I have a new customer that already has there SBS 2003 network configured.  When initially came in to take a look at their network I noticed that all of the PCs did not have their DNS pointing to the SBS server.  My question is when I change their DNS to point to the SBS server will their profiles be affected (local PC; desktop, Outlook, etc).  I am pretty sure it will but I wanted to double check so I know how to approach the customer.

Thanks,

Kevin

Agree with toniur, DNS settings shouldn't affect anything in there profiles.

On the SBS server, just go into DHCP and look for DNS 006 in scope options...set that to the SBS 2003 IP address. And obviously make sure that DNS is configured and running on the SBS. Then DHCP will automatically give new client DHCP requests, the IP address of the SBS for DNS.
If it does affect any of these clients when you make the change, then your DNS server is configured incorrectly..  All Clients in every domain situation (regardless of the server type) should (and must) have their DNS settings pointing to the DNS server, (and if using a single SBS that would certainly mean the SBS server)

Changing the dns setting will not make a difference (see FE's point above).

Make sure though that the DNS service on the SBS server has the forwarders tab set to include the external DNS resolvers, likely supplied by your ISP.
One question, were the clients getting the original dns settings from dhcp? If so, what was the dhcp server, the router or the SBS server?
Good point Keith...  let SBS do what you pay it to do..  Everything!  :)

Thanks for the comments everyone...  When I change the PCs to point to the server won't this change "documents and settings -> username to documents and settings -> username.domain" now that is contacting the SBS correctly?  I guess this is what my question is...  Keith for some reason dhcp is coming from the router not SBS, I thought SBS needed to be the dhcp server.
