hp server ram question - new DL360 G5 - windows 2003 Server R2 std.

Hi I just set up a new HP DL360 G5 - very nice machine - anyway it has 4GB of ram in it. the os is 2003 Server R2 standard. Question is why does bios and HP diagnostic report show 4GB of ram but the OS only reports 3.2GB? It does have an embedded SCSI card but this would only account for 64MB it also has an ILO card but i cant see it using so much memory. Anyone seen this before?

Here is a guess, are you using an embedded RAID controller?  Does the graphics card have its own memory?  PCI Express overhead?

Hi,

Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition should find and recognize 4GB of RAM without any problems....

Is your bios-version at the latest revision?

@ oBdA: Are you sure about PAE? I though that it´s only needed when you have more than 4GB and/or have an older OS like W2K.

Yes, seen that happen on Server 2003 quite frequently; without /pae, anything over 3.2G / 3.6G (varies) is missing.

that was it /PAE and it sees all the RAM. I have a coworker who has had a similar issue with XP will the same /PAE work with it also?

Thank you oBdA!

Should work, too, as /pae seems to be supported by XP as well; haven't had personal experience with an XP machine and 4 GB ...
