On first IE open, get The page cannot be displayed.
Hi. When I open internet explorer I receive 'The page cannot be displayed'. After the page times out I can browse normally using the same browser instance. If I open another instance while the same one is open I get the same error message, but again can browse in the instance. Earlier I removed the adware file rlvknlg.exe. I have run adaware and windows defender and it all came back clean. The workstation is running norton antivirus with updated definitions. Do any of you have any suggestions on how to fix this? I tried updating to internet explorer 7 and it did not fix the issue. Email always works (outlook express) and I can remotly connect using goto meeting. This is a new Dell computer. When the browser is looking for the inital home page the status bar shows it is trying to connect to the ip address, not the dns address. I did a tracert and the ipaddress appears to be the correct ip address of the site (www.weather.com). I tried setting the home page to www.msn.com and received the same results. Thanks for your help with this.
You may not have fully removed it, there certain listings that the scans will not delete you have to delete them manually, often safemode is the best place to run scans to completelty remove malware.
you will have to delete all your internet cookies history and temporary internet files.

A few simple things to check are:
1) Is your firewall blocking the HTTP ports (80-83)?
2) Is ActiveX disabled in Internet Options (in the Internet Security Zone)? Many sites use ActiveX, you should weigh the risks. If you use SpySweeper, its ActiveX protection function interacts with Java runtime, slowing IE.
3) Do you have an active pop-up blocker? Some web pages use these, you may need to set exceptions.
4) Is there a resource hogging app running in the background? Defrag, AV or other apps checking for updates, Google toolbar, etc.
