router dont see the internet through DSL modem
I can see the internet (browse) when connected directly to the DSL modem but not if I connect through the router, I get a server not found.
I can ping the router and go to its settings but I can't ping the internet by IP or domain.
Router : SMC 2004VWBR
Modem DSL : DLink DSL-300G

ARe you able to log in to the router?
If so, check to see how your wan settings are setup in there.
If not, let us know and we'll see if we can help with accessing the router setup.
Hook the router up to the computer and from the command prompt type: ipconfig /all and hit <enter>
This will give you the computer's ip address, and a gateway address, the gateway should be the address of your router when you are plugged into it.
You should be able to type this address in the internet explorer address bar and access it thru there.

Yes I can log in to the router!
The setup is the timezone, type of internet connexion - DSL, user name and password (both known to be good)
Other advanced which are default.
What should I look for?
Thanks

Check to see if the router is getting an ip address from the modem, this would be the wan address. Should probably be under the status tab or something like that.
Agree with riteheer,
== Go to a DOS prompt (START "cmd") and type "ipconfig /all" what IP is returned?
Could also be the router or PC is configured to STATIC addresses.
Router should be DHCP in most cases of residential accounts
Computer depends on LAN side setting of the router.

ok -- all looks good.
Can you see anywhere in the Router page the WAN settings (this would be the ISP settings side). Routers have 2 "sides" (internal)
? DHCP
ISP <------> MODEM <------------------------- -> Router <-------------------->Comp uter
WAN side LAN side
The router acts to segregrate the 2 sides.
From post, it appears your LAN side is operating fine.
Fact that the computer works fine with DHCP pretty much defines you as a DHCP customer.
Is the modem's WAN side set to a static IP address?
...If so override that automatic setting with DHCP (or "get IP automatically")
It sounds as if the router is not accepting the modem's IP address.

Are you resetting the modem when you plug it into the router? Most dsl modems give out an ip address and when you change to the router the dsl modem doesn't know this. You have to power cycle the modem, just unplug power to it, plug it into the router, and wait 10 mins before powering it back up.
Happy Holidays!
