Wireless network - keeps dropping connection

4 PC workgroup .......

1 PC is hard wired - works fine all the time.

3 PCs wirelessly - drop connections intermittently all together.

They are all XP.
Its hooked up to an N Series link sys router and modem.

All the clients have static IP addresses set into their TCPIP settings. (I have not set up a hosts file / I presume this makes absolutely no odds)

Has anyone any ideas where to start.

Try going into the setup page and setting the time out to zero, some modems when they get hot they will drop the wireless connections.

I always make sure that I turn of Authentication.  I am not sure if this has any bearing on N series equipment but it made a vast difference during the 802.11a/b/g phase of WIFI.

Open Network Connections.
Double Click your WIFI Card.
Click Properties.
Select the Wireless Networks Tab.
In the Preferred Networks Tab Select the WIFI Network you are having trouble with.
Press the Properties button.
Select the Authentication Tab.
If Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network is checked remove the check mark and okay all the way back out.

The other thing you should try is enabling broadcast.  Typically the more secure networks do not broadcast, but as a general note those are more prone to dropped signals.

And as always I am going to recommend that you upgrade your firmware.  That always has a tendancy to help.  And typically even if it is brand new there is still an update out, don't ask me why, there just usually is.

Hope that helps.

what is the signal strenth of wireless router at laptop and reinstall the wireless network driver software(updated) and configure the wireless network on that laptop and if problem is not solved then router may be faulty...

Is the Linksys WAP/Router plugged into a UPS?    If you have one, it might be worth a try.

I agree with taylorludwig, you probably have a broken device.
