Adaptec SCSI 39160 - Dell PowerVault 100T - SCSI Errors

Hello All -

I have this scenario: Windows 2000 Server SP4, Adaptec 39160 SCSI Card, PowerVault 100t. DAT72.

I keep getting these errors in the even log:

The device, \Device\Scsi\adpu160m1, did not respond within the timeout period.

and

The device, \Device\Tape0, has a bad block. (i get 4 of these).

The drive has the latest firmware, as does the Adaptec SCSI card. (3.10.0). Veritas has SP2 installed (made no difference). I have tried 5 Tapes and "There all Bad" The tape drive has the cleaning light on (even though its been cleaned six times with 2 different tapes).

The scsi cable, drive, have been replaced. the terminator light is a steday green. there is nothing else connected to this card and i have tried both channels.

I have seen this exact problem before and replaced the card with an LSI Logic card. Which fixed the error, but i dont think the scsi card is bad.

I cannot use NT backup or i keep getting the same errors, I have also disabled Removeable Storage (but had it enabled for NT backup test).

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance, this is driving me nuts!

Replace the SCSI cable.

Replace the Dell Tape Drive.  (I've had HORRIBLE experiences with Dell Tape Drives.  I'd say of the 9 or so (5 different models) I worked on, I've had 7 failures within the warranty period.  By then, we decided to stop buying Dell tape equipment and went with Overland - they were rock solid.  Also had good experiences with HP.  And in fairness, this was 3-5 years ago).

ASKER

This is the second tape drive that i have tried, and the old tape drive that was originally replaced was 6 mos old. It is also working on another server.

Ok... Then i guess i will try the SCSI card. I have been replacing the Adaptec's with the LSI logic cards. They seem to work better. Any more ideas ? because i hate to blame HW to have it be a tech issue.

do you have another system to put the scsi card into?  maybe move it over and put an external SCSI or internal SCSI device to it and see if it shows up properly?  That was the best troubleshooting tool for me.  Eliminates a lot when another system can do it and your server can't.
well thats the issue, it shows up in windows and the  SCSI BIOS just fine. Its not that the card is broken, it just isnt working right.
