I have a client with an NT4 Domain.  I have read the many articles here and on Microsoft regarding this. Many are old and I have several questions. They all seem to say that upgrading the NT4 machines is the best route.

First  Is there anything I must do differently because it is R2 W2K3?

The new machines for the migration are

Dell 2950 and an SC440 for two new W2k3 domain controllers.  The current PDC and BDC do not have enough disk space to install W2k3.  They are very old machines.  One is from 1999 and is a monster with an old Megaraid controller and 15 SCSI drives.  It is a white box that I created back in the day when we made money selling white boxes.  The BDC is one of those Tiny Bookshelf desktops.  It is like two complete opposites.  Neither have any disk space but the older one has 4 gig SCSI disks.

I read that the best way to do this if the current PDC or BDC cannot be upgraded is to create a new BDC and upgrade it to W2K3 and then join the new W2K3 server into the Domain and using DCPROMO make it a DC.  I read it here  Q_20734866.html as one example.  It mentioned using VMWARE.

How do I get rid of my old PDC and BDC once I have the W2K3 servers running as DC's and doing all the work.  If I shut them off won't I have entries in AD referencing them.

Is there anything in particular I need to know before I run the upgrade process on the NT4 PDC.  Will DNS be installed automattically.

Is the idea to do this on VMWARE a good one or should I forget about it.  I use VMware workstation for other purposes already..

I was thinking to use the SC440 if the VMWARE idea does not fly here.  Then promote the BDC to a PDC and then install W2K3.  Again my question is there anything that you can tell me that will assist with this process????  Will there be driver issues with the SC440 ya think?

LASTLY.  Before I spend the time reading my plan was to just migrate the old domain to the new W2K3 servers.  I see that this is not possible without creating a NEW Domain and using ADMT.  That seems like the cleanest final product since there will be none of the old domain settings existing in the new domain.  BUT it also seems like every users desktop and profile will have to change.  Is that correct?  I would really prefer that I get a nice new clean Domain with no remnants from NT4.

I am looking for experienced advice.  Please if you have not done this several times do not waste your post on me.  I have been around the block a few times and I ask a lot of questions and act like I never know anything. That's because I want to do it right.  Just trying to save some of you from wasting your time.

Thanks so much for not posting <BG>......
