troubleshooting Question

incorrect syntax error using net use command

I'm booting up an HP nc6000 notebook (Win XP SP2) using a universal TCP/IP network boot disk.  When I get to a command prompt I'm entering the following text:
net use g:\\servername\sharename
This drive letter is not one of our mapped network drives.  I'm receiving an error that the syntax is incorrect.  The share to which I'm trying to connect has the proper rights.  What am I doing wrong?
