troubleshooting Question return null

I am trying to create a new window reference in Javascript to write to it later.

var new_win ="", "NewWin", 'scrollbars=yes,toolbar=no,width=100,height=100');;

This works fine when I go to the page directly via http://server/page1.html.
However, if I redirect there using document.location = "page1.html", the returns null.
So I get a null pointer on line 2 at
This problem only occurs on IE, on mozilla or firefox, it works fine.

Is there a workaround for this in IE?
