Problem with Quicktime

Everything was fine until I bought Quicktime 7.13 and installed. Whenever I tried to open a streaming movie form the net, especiall from youtube and such. I got the a Quicktime icon with a question mark on it and the movie didn't play. But whenever i uninstalle the quicktime and tried playing it everything went fine.
The thing is that i would like to have my quick time in my pc and watch my movies online as well. Is it the problem setting up the plugin or are there any other method to get over it. Any suggestions.

Greetings, scoinzen !

Sounds like you are missing a codec.  When you install Quicktime, make sure you update it with the latest codecs, specially the ones that run youtube and such.

Best wishes!

Thanks war1, but i have got the uptodate software. Just had it updated yesterday.
Or if it is the problem with youtube, how can I know which codes the sites use and what codes to download.
Just testing the movies on Youtube they use adobe flash player9
when I r/click the playing window about it shows this page and what version I have
http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/about/
Update your adobe reader and flash player

how long since you checked office updates?
what version of directx 9c?
adobe reader
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3397

might pay to check windows updates and the software drivers section.

In quicktime make sure that its not associated with flash player then see if that works, if not then reset IE to its defaults after you have un associated it with that file type :)
when I say not associated with flash player I mean not associated with any file types that flash player uses for example swf etc.
I have checked it on the youtube as as Merete told and got the latest flash player. So I uninstalled Quicktime and tried to open the page again in IE and Mozilla but it still failed and got the same icon with a question mark. Thinking it to be the browsers fault I downloaded Opera and suprisingly everything goes on fine on Opera. And the video plays without any problem. The thing is that I like using Mozilla rather than opera, is there anything  wrong with the browers (IE and Mozilla). Any suggestions.
You need QT as well scoinzen
btw do you have xpsp2 installed? I may have missed it somewhere/
here is the stand alone version of QT no I-tunes.
http://www.apple.com/au/quicktime/download/standalone.html

Scan your pc for spyware just incase your browser has been hijacked
download HijackThis 1.99.1,from the direct link
http://www.hijackthis.de/
save it to a folder on your desktop and then install to that.
run the scan and save a log but dont fix
copy the entire log and paste it there as well>>   http://www.hijackthis.de/
below the panel  hit analyze, now just scroll down to
have a look at the results of the analyzed log.
at the bottom of the page>> save the analyzed log
then copy that URL back here  if you need any assistance,
if it finds anything re-run and fix it.

Delete all your history and temporary internet files.

try repairing IE
close all IE browsers.
go to start run type sfc /scannow you will need your xpcd.

Go to Start>> Run, type in each of the following and press Enter after each one:

I use Maxthon try it out
Maxthon (formerly MyIE2) is a multipage browser based on the Internet Explorer core (IE 5 or 6 required).

IE6
If the Media Bar is not visible on the left of the Internet Explorer window, on the toolbar, click Media. If you don't see the Media button, on the View menu, point to Explorer Bar, and then click Media.

2.
At the bottom of the Media Bar is a player. If the player is not playing any media, its button name will be Media Options. If the Media Bar is playing content, the button will be the name of the stream. Click this button to see more options. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/knowledgecenter/mediaadvice/0076.mspx

Re-install IE

Thanks Merete, I tried all of your suggestions but the problem is still the same. I can play the videos without any problem in Opera but not in Firefox and IE.
your comment from original
But whenever i uninstalle the quicktime and tried playing it everything went fine.<<<<But not IE???or firefox??
If the above is true then video plays okay in IE and Firefox if you dont QT installed?

then the problem is simply with QT?
Check the file associations as mentioned earlier and remove them from QT.
Open QT player if you get a message some file associations are not QT do you wish to make the asociate with QT say NO.
If you said yes at anytime in the past then you'll have to go thru them all and untick everything and have only QT minimal file associations until you sort it.

Click on Edit preferences QT preferences>
Browser tick  play movies automatically ONLY
Streaming Automatic and enable instant on
file types>  at the bottom when your done tick Notify me if other applications modify these asociations
in streaming SDP only
in Video  QT movies and digital Video DV only
none in MP3
images Mac QT Pict
in miscelainous   tick QT(QHTM) "only"
Advanced
Video
Direct draw enable
enable on secondary monitor
apply and ok
" END"
I tried everything from above but still couldn't make it. So this time I again uninstalled Quicktime and when I tried to open it back again on IE and Firefox I got the following message,

"QuickTime Unavailable

The QuickTime Plug-in requires the QuickTime System extension version 5 or later.

QuickTime is available from http://www.apple.com/quickti"

which is unusual because in my friends computer which does not have Quicktime installed does not ask this question and didnt use to ask me as well, before.
