Is this a printed error page? What error comes up on the printer console?

This is a printed error page. Not sure what comes up on the printer console I will have to go and take a look.
It is hard to reproduce so I cannot see the error messages on the acutal printer. Any ideas?
I should mention that once he reboots his computer the problem temporarly goes away.

This is a weird error. A PCL XL error normally happens when when something goes wrong with PCL6 drivers and is usually fixed by changing to a PCL5 or PostScript driver. However, the 3600 does not use any flavour of PCL or PostScript: it is a GDI printer, i.e. it does not understand any printer language, but instead relies on Windows' graphics engine to do all the work.

I've found a couple of instances of these errors on HP's support forum. One of them, with a slightly different message, was caused by a flaky network cable. Others had no fix at all.

You can try installing the latest driver from

What are the time out setting on the PC and the printer?
I will try and reinstall the driver an let you guys know.

thanks,

I have this fun printer issue.... Windows 2003 print server running terminal services. Two of our network printers , both HP Color LaserJet 3600, spit out kernal errors and will not print. This printer only has a host based driver and I believe this is why....The odd thing is that is printer worked fine for two years and then randomly started this.

Here is one of them:
PCL XL error
Subsytem: KERNAL
Error: IllegalTag
Operator: 0x00
Position: 3

If I manually add the printer to a computer it works fine. We are a higher education institution and use Netop PrintLimit Pro Print Management Software. This system is important since without it students and print for free. Basicly it is installed on the print server and a client is installed on each machine which monitors printing and subtracts $ when students print.

I've tried updating firmware, updating driver, changing driver to other generic version of HP Color LaserJet but still no results. All of our computers that are getting this error are Windows XP Pro.

Any ideas?

We are actually running TCP Printing Services not terminal service.
