"Spooler SubSystem App has encountered a problem", can't keep print spooler running.

I downloaded a DOS based program from a vendor and tried to print a report from the program.  Ever since, whenever I try to use or even delete my printer or it's driver I get this Error message;
Spooler SubSystem App has encountered a problem and needs to close

Error signature;
szAppName : spoolsv.exe szAppVer : 5.1.2600.2696 szModName : ntdll.dll
szModVer : 5.1.2600.2180 offset : 0001347e

Error Report content;
C:\DOCUME~1\COMMUN~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER97a2.dir00\spoolsv.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\COMMUN~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER97a2.dir00\appcompat.txt

Restarted spooler several times, but get error message again as soon as I try to do anything with the printer.

Very important to get this unit up and running again, your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, GW

have you try runinng the following command

START | RUN | SFC /SCANNOW

you need to have your cd handy in case that a file needs to be replaced.

IF that does not work please read the following KB and see if that applies to your issue

Lee, Thanks for the help, cleanspl.exe in the resource kit was the key.  Everything up and running 10 minutes before the opening bell.  Make sure you share some of these points with Mr. Sanders.

Microsoft has released a Fix It document and file to resolve this issue. View the Microsoft KB document titled Fix printing problems by resetting the print spooler (Article ID: 2000007) . This will reset the print spooler back to default settings.
