Mapping drives via VPN - can't use name but can map using ip address

Hi.  I have a strange problem.  When people connect via the VPN, and then force their login script, sometimes it won't map the file server drives.
However, when troubleshooting this problem, I can ping the server by both name and ip and I can do an nslookup for the server name - so it isn't a DNS problem.

If I force the mapping with the IP address instead of the name - it works fine.

Has anyone ever seen this?  Any ideas how to fix it?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Oh - these are XP machines, using a Cisco VPN and Windows 2003 Server.

Dosent look like a name resolution problem, however i'd still try this,

On the client PPP adapter, I'd add a connection specific dns suffix with my domain name and would also add a dns suffix search list.

Cheers!

Name resolution over a VPN can be flaky at best. There are 4 options:
1) use the IP (rock solid)
2) add an entry for the sever in the Lmhosts file (please advise if you need help with this)
3) Add a WINS server, and it's IP on the connecting client's TCP/IP properties
4) Add your internal DNS server's IP and DNS suffix (as suggested by ajayprk ) to the connecting client's TCP/IP properties

I will try adding the DNS to the TCP/IP properties... however, I did add it to the hosts file.  Do you think that the lmhosts makes a difference?

While I ended up removing the Cisco client and reinstalling - this fixed the issue...  I think that Rob gave me the best information - but ajayprk - that tool is the best tool I have seen in quite a while.

so thanks to both of you.
Thanks suzbara. Wonder if re-installing the Cisco client updated the DNS configuration. Regardless, glad to hear it is working.
