Graphics with alpha channel transparency

I am trying to use 32 bit icons with alpha transparency in VB 6 in any kind of borderless, clickable control.  I've found a workaround using CreateIconFromResourceEx and OleCreatePictureIndirect to open the icon without VB 6 erroring (since it thinks 32 bit icons aren't a valid icon file), but when I apply that picture to an Image, PictureBox, or CommandButton object it degrades to 256 colours.  It works correctly with ToolBar controls, but the toolbar control isn't right for the functionality that I need.

And so, what I need is either some other way of forcing the basic VB objects to handle 32 bit colour with alpha transparency, or some third party object that can display only the icon (no frame + transparent background) as well as having mouse click functionality.
