Computer Management>Disk Management error

Unsure which area I should use.  I hope 'Disk Management' is a hardware problem.
Win XP SR2
 2 USB external HDs attached
 1 NAS HD attached
When I select 'Disk Management' under 'Storage,' nothing happens for 2-3 minutes then I get a - popup 'Server Execution Failed.'
How do I resolve this?
I know this much.
  Services>Logical Disk Manager is running
Services>Logical Disk Manager Administrative Services is running
With no external drives and NAS drive disconnected (and sw uninstalled) from the PC I still get the error.
---------------------
related or not
services.msi - when I try to run this, nothing happens
sfs /scannow - when I run this, nothing happens
F:/ drive - don't know where I got this.  Contains 39meg of space; unformatted.  It was my attempt to remove this partition that led to the discovery of the Disk Management problem.
Explorer - when I open Explorer and try to expand 'My Computer, the PC 'searches' for 3-4 minutes before a list of drives appears.  Selecting any folder in the right pane results in a cmd? screen appearing.  I can select and run files in the right pane but can not select folders.
DCOM error - Event ID 10005.  Have a post in another channel that may resolve this by reinstalling DCOM.

It sounds like some of your services have been disabled.  Did you do this deliberately, and have you checked for malware?  You can usually get your OS back to a working state by running a repair install, unless your registry got corrupted: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Any disabled services would be unintentional.
Don't mind trying a repair install but wonder . . . what is the downside?
Just to check for some virus/trojan which disable things you can use to remove them - can you open regedit - Start Run regedit? Can you open Task Manager? If so that isn't the problem. Try running sfc /scannow from an open command prompt. I presume your "sfs /scannow" is just a typo.

The only downside to a repair install is that you have to reapply patches and updates to the OS since the CD version.  SFC /scannow does something similar.
sfc /scannow - nothing happens.  Nothing.
FWIW, services.msi - same thing, nothing happens.
I presume services.msi is service-related.
How about DCOM and COM+.  Are these service-related?
malware - ran 3 different detection apps.  Squeaky clean.
Sfc is effectively aware of updates as Windows File Protection updates the dllcache with newer versions as they are installed, so provided the dllcache folder has not been corrupted or overwritten, it won't replace newer with older. An indication that such a problem has occurred however will be sfc asking for your XP disk.

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/222193

What is services.msi? services.msc opens the control panel services window. Something may have happened to sfc.exe which lives in System32. If you rename it, as a protected file Windows will immediately replace it.

Since sfc is not working, a repair install may be the way to go.
Sure looks like it. Don't much like that it won't run though. SignedUp, can you confirm that you can run regedit and open Task Manager?

Chris B
services.msc - yeah, wich I could type.  Start>run>services.msc - nothing happens.
regedit - opens.
Task Manager - CTRL-ALT-DEL opens it up.
renamed sfc.  Now every time I go to cmd and type "sfc /scannow" I get a File Protection popup that tells me it is verifying protected files are intact..
<<I get a File Protection popup that tells me it is verifying protected files are intact..>> This is good - now it is running correctly. Did it ask for your XP CD? If not, then the dllcache is intact and the process should complete. It won't say anything at the end, it just disappears when finished. Afterwards try start - run - sevices.msc again. If the services tab opens then things are looking better. Give it a reboot and see if the original errors persist. If still no joy, then I guess it is time for the repair install. Personally though, I would move any data off the drive and format it, particularly if the partition setup is suspect. Nothing like the occasional clean start.

Chris B
OK, ran services.msc again.  Still, nothing seems to happen. No errors.  No popups.  Nothing.  But, then, I don't know what is *supposed* to happen.
Guess next step is run a repair and, maybe this weekend, do a reformat.
Before I check off on 'Accept' one thing I have not mentioned because I do not think it is related.
Infrequently I get an Event id of
Event Type:      Error
Event Source:      MsiInstaller
Event Category:      None
Event ID:      10005
Description:
Product: WMI Redistributable Components -- Installation did not proceed as this redistribution pack is intended for only Windows 98, Windows 98SE, Windows Millennium Edition, or Windows 2000 with Service Pack 2 or above.
-----------------------------------
And I'm running XP SR2.  Doesn't seem to hurt anything though.

Fair enough.  I don't like the answer, but the rules here do not require I like it.  Just that the answer is correct.
Answer accepted.
