To Exchange or not to Exchange

I have a network with a single Active Directory Domain .  We have about 150 users, and about 175-200 email addresses.
There are 3 diferent email domains that we currently have.
The mail server we are using was originally purchased to act solely as an internal email server.
Since we bought it, we have brought our email in-house, and decided to just use the same mail server as our primary mail server.
This worked fine for a year and a half. now that we are getting bigger, and Spam seems to be getting worse,
it seems that this mail server just isnt cutting it.  It allows a lot of spam in, and rejects a lot of legitimate messages.

My question is whether I should buy exchange or something cheaper like merkemail, workgroup, Imail Server or something else.

What would do inmy situation?

you will find loads of info on why to go for exchange on microsoft and the internet so i wont go into it
there is so much you can do with it its unreal-most admins never use half the features
the fact your are expanding means exchange would come in handy-ex 2003 allows for greater storage(75g for standard) even more for enterprise and greater remote access features-they were the 2 big sellers
owa was one it is a way of viewing your email through the internet browser, there is also RPC(an outlook feature)
spam will always be a problem exchange has its own built in filtering for spam (IMF) -many choose to use third party exchange aware spam filters or hosted companies like postini and message labs who also do a good job
what product works for some does not work for others
are you going to have many users remotely accessing your email?
i dont know anything about the other email servers so i cant comment
what i did not mention was exchange 2007-now alot would say to stay awy from this as we do not know enough about it yet and its only just released-but here is a useful guide
