We're doing a migration of SAN storage from a Hitachi 9980V to a Hitachi USP, using the externalization and volume migration features of the USP. What this means to the server is that the LUNs get migrated transparently in the background. The problem that we're having with Oracle 10g RAC environments using ASM (on Solaris servers) is that the migrated LUNs are seen by the server as new LUNs, so they get new device files at the OS level. Since ASM accesses each LUN via its Solaris device file, ASM will now be trying to access a device file that no longer exists.
It seems as though we're going to have to do a lot of manual remapping of LUNs, either by hand of via a script. For large, multi-terabyte environments, this will require lengthy outages and dramatically increase the chance of having problems during the migrations. I'm sure somebody must have done similar storage migrations for RAC clusters. Is there's a simpler way to do this?
