Hard drive access problem

I have a Maxtor 72GB drive that has some VMWare guests on it.  The drive started acting up and at first would not let me see any of the data on it.  I left the system set for a month and then booted it back up.  Low and behold I could see the VM files.  I should have put in another drive and copied the files while I had the chance.  Instead, I ended up putting in a new motherboard with a couple of 250GB SATA drives thinking I could copy the files from the 72GB drive to the second 250GB SATA drive.  I now have a new 250GB SATA drive with W2K03 as the boot drive, a second 250GB SATA drive to hold the VMs, and the 72GB drive is connected to the primary IDE channel.

After getting W2K03 installed on the new 250GB drive, I proceeded to try and access the VMWare files on the 72GB drive.  No luck.  Windows sees the 72 GB drive as unformatted and asks if I want to format it.  Is there any way that I can get the VM's off of this drive?

Thanks.

I am currently running getdataback.  It has been running for 20hrs and is only 35% complete.  Will it require me to purchase and rerun?

I have not used linux much.  Am I correct that I can create a bootable CD of linux from http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/download.html and then try to access my inaccessible HD?

Thanks.

I appreciate all the suggestions.  I am currently running GetDataBack on the system.  I will update everyone as soon as the analysis completes.

Thanks.

I am currently waiting on the GetBackData software to finish its analysis.  It has been running for almost two weeks.  I hope to have this completed shortly.

Alas, I was not able to recover the data on my drive.  All comments were helpful so I will try to split the points.

Thanks.
