Workgroup networking

I have a couple of general questions on what the steps are for setting up a workgroup network manually.
I know that win xp pro has a network setup utility built onto the cd and I have used that before. Does win xp home & media center also have the same setup on their respective CD's ? and or can you use a win xp pro cd on home & media center to run the network setup?

Also is it possible to setup a workgroup network by just going into the computer properties and changing the workgroup name to "mshome or whatever" on a 4 or 5 pc network....

Next I know that I that I have to setup the IP & Subnet, Gateway and DNS server ip if I don't allow it to be done automatically.
I guess what I want to know is there additional software that needs to be installed.

also is it ok to connect win xp media center, home, and pro operating systems together.

Answering last to first.

All windows OS's work, and play together nicely. :-) No problems connecting them all in a workgroup

You should not need additional software to connect. The OS has all the required protocols installed to connect them.

What I have done if you don't trust that you are going to set them up the same, is to run the network setup wizard on one of the systems, and there is an option to create a floppy, or USB "copy" of the network configuration that you can use during the network configuration wizards on the other systems.

can I run the network setup option that is part of the win xp pro cd, on a media center & home editions also.
I guess I am not familiar with the network setup option on the CD, but the same results should be rendered from the Network setup wizard under All Programs>accesories>Communications>network setup wizard

The only problem you might run into is if the XP pro system is part of a domain. Other than that everything should be fine.
