Bad backups, data error, cyclic redundancy check

I have a server that is about 6 years old, it has a new backup drive and all new tapes. I am getting the following error message after the backup runs every night:

Storage device "Seagate 1" reported an error on a request to write data to media.

Error reported:
Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

The status of the backup is always Failed and the byte count is way lower than it should be.

I'm not sure what my next step should be, this server doesn't have exchange or anything it's windows server 2000, it's basically a file server and an application server for our accounting software. The software being used to backup is BackupExec version 8. There is about 4 or 5 users that use it.

I also checked the System Log and I am getting an error a couple minutes after the backup runs, Event ID 7.
