Learning to setup a vpn

I recently had a client that i needed to set up a vpn. They were using an actiontec router/dslmodem for internet service then going into a linksys vpn router. This problem was a nightmare and i realized i know nothing about setting up a vpn. Can anyone recommend a site that i can go to to learn more about setting up a vpn to include bridging modems and routers?

i am familiar with how a vpn works and what it is for. The problem i ran into is i had to bridge a router and modem. Thats what i was unaware of how to do. The router is a rvo42 and the modem is an actiontec dsl modem. The router wasnt getting a public wan ip address for us to vpn into. I was told i had to bridge it with the modem to enable it to get a public address. I had no idea how to do this.
ok so your only dealing with one end of this vpn tunnel? the server end? and he has an internet connection which comes in through a dsl router and connects to the Linksys vpn device which in turn is supposed to connect to external pc's?

What you need to do is probably not to bridge the connections although it is a possible solution what would be more useful for you is to portforward the ports/protocols required for vpn to the Linksys router and the router will effectivly have the dsl connections external ip address for all VPN stuff
what ports are used for vpn. are there certain ones that are always used or what???   i have linksys quick vpn client setup on the external pc's so thats not an issue. just tryin to get a good address on the vpn router to vpn into.
it depends on the vpn protocol, i use pptp and for that its all GRE traffic plus tcp and udp port 1723, but you may well want to use IPsec and im not sure what the ports for that are, you will have to google for them, you might struggle a bit getting GRE traffic through a primative firewall but its probably do'able and if your using ipsec i think its all over TCP or UDP anyway
I am setting up port fowarding on the actiontec router to the vpn router. I have forwarded tcp and udp port 1723. Its asking me for an ip address when i forward the ports. I put in the address of the vpn router, is that correct?
I am still not getting a public address on my wan ip in the vpn router. I was told that i have to have a public wan ip address to vpn into. As you can tell i am not familiar with what i am doin here but tryin to learn as i go.
I have also forwarded all GRE, still no better
