Win2000:  How to Restore the Desktop

O/S:           Windows 2000 Professional, SPK 4

From time to time my Desktop gets screwed up.
It happens whenever the Task Bar is inadvertently dragged from the bottom of the screen to the side of the screen. After that most of my desktop icons are scrambled all over the screen while some do not reappear until I've rebooted several times.

I think it happens because some of my icons are out at the left part of the screen and when the Task Bar tries to displace them everything gets messed up.

I've got about 100 icons on my desktop (I know it slows things down) and they are arranged in a way that I can remember where everthing is. It can take about an hour to fix things up again.

The last time this happened I copied an earlier version of my Desktop folder to C:\Documents and Settings\Gary\Desktop.
Surprisingly this did not change the desktop layout.

Question:  Where is the desktop layout stored and how can it be restored ?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

In addition, there may be some utilities out there that allow you to save and restore the desktop icons and layout.

I hope this helps !
