Creating a internal dns record for an external internet web server

I have a vendor who has a service set up on their web server. They apparently do not have a dns record on the internet for their web server.  Their instructions say to edit the local host files of the computer that will be accessing this web page to point the ip address that they give, to web_svr so that the user only need type in http://web_svr

I created a host record on our internal dns server, but it does not seem to work.  I only get host not found, but when using the ip address, it works fine.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.
