How to use VPN

I have succesfully created a VPN connection in XP pro using the Network Connections "Create a New Connection" setup wizard. The VPN is connected to SBS 2003 through the office's static IP address. I have no problems connecting to the VPN but my question is what to do with it now? Three things I would like to be able to do are see network shares, map drives to those shares and connect to the exchange server without using the OWA method. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Once you are connected to the VPN, and the PC is a member of the domain, You should be able to do what you are asking like with any PC. Exactly what is the problem?

The problem is that shares don't work and therefor drives can't be mapped. Just to clarify I have a laptop with a docking station. When docked or when accessing the office network through office wireless connection everything works fine. When the laptop is offsite I can establish a VPN connection but none of the shares are available (the exchange server connection has been solved using RPC over HTTP).

I will try dbrunton's suggestion but I need some time as it looks like it could take a while.
When you are connected via VPN, are you connecting to the server using your Active Directory Domain Account or are you using a local account on the Laptop? You will have to use the domain account to be able to use the server's resources.
To be honest, I'm not sure. I login/logon to the laptop the same way everytime, whether I'm in the office or not. How do I make sure I'm using the Active Directory Domain Account?
On the login screen if you expand the options, you should be able to select the domain or the local computer. Just check what you have in the drop down list.
The recommendation that dbrunton provided is not what you want to do.  That's for joining a remote computer to the domain.

As for connecting via VPN, you need to run the SBS Remote Access Connection Wizard (Server Management Console > Internet and Email  section).  Then, go to the Remote Web Workplace main menu (from inside the LAN :  http://<sbsserver>/remote, or from outside https://staticIP/remote) and download the Small Business Server Connection Manager -- which is your VPN client.

Once connected with the client, you can then view any network shares by clicking START > RUN... and in the run box enter \\<SBSSERVER>  (where SBSSERVER is the name of your server).

This will bring up all of the server's shares, and you can map any drive letter you like to any share.

I've followed all of TechSo Easy's  instructions up to connecting with the client. It seems I can connect. In the network connections properties I am showing "Connect to Small Business Server" as "Connected, Firewalled".

However, typing \\<SBSSERVER> or \\<STATICIPADDRESS> from the START > RUN box results in a message that the network path was not found.
