#5.5.0 smtp;553 mailbox xxx@xxx.com is restricted (Mode: normal)

Problem with receiving email.  Getting this error when sending:
There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server. Please contact your system administrator.
  <mail.xxx.com #5.5.0 smtp;553 mailbox aholbrook@xxx.com is restricted (Mode: normal)>

I tested another user and it goes through fine.  Their email is routed through MXLogic for spam filtering.  Any ideas?  I can't find anything on here about this issue.  I'm guessing it is something to do with spam, but is it at MXLogic or on the Exchange server on the users site?

Hello,

The reporting MTA in the NDR is the recipient's server (assuming xxx=xxx). This means the problem is on their end. I would contact the recipient by phone and have them take the issue up with their tech support.

We are their tech support.  I found that the user creation in MXLogic was set to explicit and this users email was not setup so when we sent to her it basically just denied delivery...  Not good, but we figured it out.

Turns out that it was the reverse dns not being setup correctly.  Haven't had an issue since!
FYI, I just had this same issue with an MX Logic client.  The user creation mode was set to SMTP discovery and the account had been setup for months, but something happened on the MX Logic servers that the email address was set as unrecognized (only on some servers - hence the intermittent behavior).  The fix was to have MX Logic replicate their servers.  Good Luck!
I was also receiving the same 553 message and use MX Logic.  I had the account setup on MX Logic just fine, it turned out to be a problem with our Exchange server.

It was happening on a newly created account and I had to login to the account that would not receive emails through OWA to send a test message (to any email) before a mailbox was created on the Exchange server.  Once this was done I stopped receiving the 553 return messages.
Yes the MX logic was the problem for me. The user acount was not created in the MX logic portal. I created the user acount and the issue is resolved.
I got this error when we rehired an employee that left the company.  Turned out that during the time when he wasn't an employee, his email address was added to the 'recipent sheild'.  Removing his name from that allowed the emails to go through as normal.

Mxlogic portal ->email defense -> policies->allow/deny->recipient sheild
I had the same setup as LamontHolm: just an added note. It did not allow emails in until AFTER I signed out of the MXLogic (now Mcafee) portal.
