Windows XP installation hangs at "Registering components" stage
I am trying to upgrade a Packard Bell Platinum desktop from W98 to XP. I am doing a full install after formatting the disk using the XP install process. The installation hangs every time during "registering components" stage with 14 minutes left to go. I have updated the BIOS, tried new media & optical drive, removed all cards except the graphics adapter to no effect. Any suggestions welcome.

PC has 384mb RAM. MOBO is MSI MS-6199VA which supports XP. Packard Bell web site has a BIOS upgrade for XP for the Platinum range so I assumed it supports XP.

Anyway I fixed the problem by removing the LAN, Sound & modem PCI card & XP is now installed.

Will split points - thanks for your help.

Microsoft said that 256 MB is enough to install XP and they recommended 512 MB.
