problem connection to the internet - error 12029

Hi
I am having problems connecting to the internet with Internet Explorer.  It gives an error message of "FTP (passive) error 12029 connecting to FTP Microsoft.com. "  It says that HTTP and HTTPS are OK. I am not very PC literate and need some help.    My PC is connected to a Belkin ADSL router and all is working well with the 2 notebooks that are attached wireless through this.  They both are connecting fine as is E-mail on my desktop.  I have tried reconfiguring the connections unsucessfully and am now lost. Can you help?

1: Make sure you have an active and working connection to the Internet. If you are viewing this page, you more than likely have a connection. As above, you might try to connect later.

2: If you have a firewall, it might be preventing First Class from accessing the Internet. Try turning off your firewall temporarily, and then try to update again. (Remember to turn it back on again when you're done.) If turning off your firewall eliminates the error, then you will have to change a setting so that the firewall will give permission to First Class. Consult the manual for your firewall. If you are using the Windows XP firewall, go to the Control Panel and open Windows Firewall. On the Exceptions tab, click the Add Program... button, select First Class Version 2, and click OK. If you are using Norton Personal Firewall, you can get instructions on how to configure the firewall here.

3: If you have a firewall or a DSL modem, you may need to use passive FTP. To turn on this feature, start Internet Explorer. Click on Tools > Internet Options... On the Advanced tab, you should find a setting that says "Use passive FTP" or something like that. Make sure that check box is checked, then click the OK button.

I am going to take a guess that you are using IE7, and have recently installed this...

If you have any software firewalls, or really secure Anti Virus programs you will need to disable them when you install IE7.  First remove IE7, reboot, disable your AV and Firewall temporarily, reinstall IE7 and this should fix the problem.

Here is some info about this error from the below link:
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/10/11/IE7-Installation-and-Anti_2D00_Malware-Applications.aspx

==================================================
A few people have asked why we recommend temporarily disabling anti-virus or anti-spyware applications (which I’ll refer to together as anti-malware) prior to installing IE7, so here’s a little insight to the situation.

Along with copying IE7 files to your system, IE7’s setup writes a large number of registry keys.  A common way anti-malware applications protect your computer is by preventing writes to certain registry keys used by IE.  Any registry key write that fails during setup will cause setup to fail and rollback changes.  We work around the problem in most instances by checking permissions at the beginning of setup, but many anti-malware programs monitor the key rather than change permissions.  Therefore, setup thinks it has access when it starts, but then fails when it later attempts to write the key.

The majority of users likely haven’t seen any such problems even with anti-malware enabled because we work with third-party vendors to identify IE7 setup as ‘safe’ based on something like digital signatures or file hashes.  While this could lead us to remove the recommendation to disable anti-malware apps, we’ve decided to leave it in setup because a number of factors may still cause some customers to have this problem.  Specifically:

    * With all the anti-malware apps available, we don’t want to assume all of them work just because we haven’t heard of a problem yet.
    * Even anti-malware apps we’ve tested sometimes require the latest definition updates.  If a user doesn’t have the latest definitions, he or she may still hit a problem even though we consider the issue resolved.
    * Failed installation is an awful user experience so we take every step to reduce the chances of setup failing.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the rapid replies.  I have IE7 running but that has been the case for a lot of months now.   The problem and error has only happened today.  I have norton antivirus and internet security installed but the firewall is not operating.  I have also ensured that the Windows firewall is off.  It seems a big step to remove IE 7 and reinstall it.  Would you still recommend this in these circumstances - ie when it has been running fine for months with IE 7.
Additionally, I was trying to get my sons new Xbox 360 connected to the internet yesterday with no success.  I do not think that this would have caused any problem with my desk top - but perhaps it has resulted in something changing.  Any additional indeas or instructions would be appreciated.

Are you actually tring to get to an FTP site, or does this error just pop up wherever you try to surf to..?

Have you tried taking DNS out of the picture?  (using the IPAddress instead of the 'friendly' name)

i.e.:  instead of just going to www.google.com, use its IPAddress instead:  http://64.233.167.104
WarrenManley,

Perform a System Restore to a date before you tried to install the Xbot, Friday or before. A system file could be corrupted from the installation/uninstallation.

If no joy, you should uninstall and reinstall IE7.  It is easy to uninstall from Add/Remove Programs.  And if you still have the IE& setup program, you do not have download it again to install.
I do not even know what an FTP site is!!!  The same goes for DNS,  I have just tried the google address you included and that has not worked.  I am working here on my notebook which is firing on all cylinders.  The fact that e mail is working on my desktop proves that there is a good internet connection operating.
Mr Husy -  I have tried what you suggested but in add/remove programmes there is no First Class to select.  On the other idea I have found the setting re. using Passive FTP and this was already ticked.

Brilliant!!!  Back on line - very slow but at least it is working again.  Many thanks.

Bsd news -  despite getting the internet working last night it has gone back to the way it was before.  I have tried the system restore again but this time it has not solved the problem.  Should I now try the removal of IE 7?
Run this script to fix your connection
http://downloads.subratam.org/WinsockFix.zip
Or, if you have SP2 installed, try running this command from the Command Shell:

Start > Run > cmd

netsh interface reset all
Thanks to both of you.  I decided to go with the removal of IE 7 as suggested by War1 earlier. That seems to have solved my problem.  Is there advantage in reinstalling it if I am happy with the earlier version?

Personallly, I have gotten to like the new IE7..   I don't use the add-ons (phishing), but they seem to be a nice addition..  but if you are satisfied with the older version, stick with it...  :)
I recently had the same error message (ERROR 12029) after I had recovered a machine from a malware crash.
I put the crashed drive in another machine as a secondary drive and ran MaleWareBytes (.com) to recover the drive. The recovery went well, but I could not get on my LAN or the internet through my router. After several hours of  futile "diagnostics", I noticed that on the Explorer screen, Tools, Internet Options, Connections, LAN Settings -- the "Automatically detect settings" was not checked, and that "Proxy server" was checked, directing it to use 120.0.0.7 for Port 80. I checked "Automatically detect settings" and unchecked "Use Proxy server......"
This corrected my problem. All I can assume is that the malware that killed the machine made this change to gain control.. I hope it might do the same for you.
