NTBACKUP Append and Overwrite

I have an external hard drive connected to a computer.  I want to see if NTBACKUP can backup the My Documents of the computer.  I would like it to backup to the drive and either append or overwrite the media when the hard drive fills up.  For example, I would always want two weeks of data on the hard drive.  Is there any way that I can get NTBACKUP to do this?  If not, is there a free utility or software that can do what I want?  Thanks.

Yes. All you have to do is see the Advanced features of NTBackup.

After you have done the wizard, do not click the Finish button. Click the Advanced button. In there, you can choose what type of the backup that you want like Incremental, Differentially, Daily etc. You can also Append/Overwrite an existing backup, scheduled (Daily, Weekly, Monthly etc).

I would script this.  A batch script can accomplish this.

The Documents and Settings folder includes a lot of data and files that you can't copy because there are parts of the registry there and a lot of files are system files and open and in use by the PC.

I mean, NTBackup is very scriptable.  You can create a small script that would execute NTBACKUP and delete jobs older than 2 weeks.  I actually do exactly that at a client - it keeps between 1 and 2 weeks available on the disk and every Friday, removes the oldest week's backups.

Right now, I use NTBackup (incremental) to backup my documents (D:\My Documents) folder. I created full backup 1st then create a new backup (incremental & append) with the same name/place.

Thanks for the help!

rulirahmadi,
NTBackup would overwrite the information once a removable hard drive filled up with space?  I know the more advanced software packages will overwrite older backups.

leew,
Could you provide me with an example of how I could retain, lets say, two weeks of backups and use NTBackup to overwrite the oldest?

Microsoft Windows XP is the sixth release of the NT series of operating systems, and was the first to be marketed in a variety of editions: XP Home and XP Professional, designed for business and power users. The advanced features in XP Professional are generally disabled in Home Edition, but are there and can be activated. There were two 64-bit editions, an embedded edition and a tablet edition.
