Thanks for the comments guys, i was rather hoping people wouldnt post with 'straight vs cross' or 'duplex' comments, &nbsp;ive been a network engineer for 4 years--- Have found out its a dodgy ethernet port.<br />

I have a rather old cisco 3640 router with 3 ethernet ports --802.3 , when i connect it to a swith cor a laptop, i get a physical link, but line protocol down!<br />
<br />
my configuration is very simple..<br />
<br />
int eth 0/0<br />
duplex full<br />
arp arpa &nbsp;(tried it without this statemet too)<br />
ip address x.x.x.x<br />
<br />
Have no idea why it doesnt work!<br />
