Registry Key Permissions Missing
I have a Windows XP SP2 computer that is having trouble reinstalling quicktime, it gives a permissions error during the process. I've traced the problem to several registry keys. The user is an administrator on the computer, but they can't view/modify/delete several keys related to quicktime. I can't even open the permissions on those keys. How can I modify the permissions on the keys or delete the keys?
You can't 'right-click' on the key and go through the 'Take Ownership' process?

Various malware programs (some smitfraud variants in particular) will "lock" registry keys (access denied). I recommend you first run a scan with SuperAntiSpyware -- link below.

I've had to go up the Registry Key tree to section root and reset all child permissions (e.g HKEY_Local_Machine) to allow access in some cases. If problem is a smitfraud infection, SmitFraudFix usually takes care of Registry permissions for you.

Thanks for the help, I haven't used subinacl except for NTFS permissions but it did the trick. I split the points, sirbounty got the right answer but orangutang's article shows how to make the changes very simply.
