Essentials Web vs Front Page

Essentials web features

I understand that Essentials Web (EW) is replacing Front Page (FP). This raises several questions.
1.      Is that statement true?
2.      Does EW have a navigation view? (or similar)
3.      Does EW have a Photo Gallery component?
4.      Does EW have themes (or do CCS pages provide that same functionality)?
5.      Are front page extensions on the server necessary for EW webs?
6.      Is there a book which provides details about EW?
