help on this please

Hello my friends, I have a tricky question. A company has been asked to perform the initial network architecture and design with the following requirements:
A 10 terabyte UNIX DB2 database is used for things like part lists and experimental results. A smaller Oracle database running on Windows servers has the responsibility of administration of data, and personnel data. The network will require 2000 hosts in the design and development department, 20 in the personnel department, and 100 in the acquisition department. Both of these departments will need access to Windows printers and UNIX-based design plotters. The commanding officer of the project and his staff of 20 subordinates will need wireless virtual private network (VPN) access and secure web access.

Now my question:
Someone could help me how to start this network? I mean, I just need to know what are the primary architectural design configurations in this case?

it is an example I am working with.  What kind of secure measure do you think is the best choice to apply? I know that perimet firewall is a good idea. I am also confuse because the network will have 2 different platforms. Windows and Unix.  SAMBA could be a solution?

Thanks in advance.

Hello SunBow, yes I have this in mind as well. why to have oracle on windows...But I believe that a wireless to the 20 subordinates will be helpful. I think the VPN safer.
Thanks for your comments.

Network management also includes monitoring, alerting and reporting, management reporting, planning for device or service updates, the backup of configurations, the setting of key performance indicators and measures (KPIs/KPMs), associated service level agreements and problem records as part of the IT Service Management (ITSM) framework.
