asked on

new domain and need to move over AD and exchange and users ..etc

i have an old server ..it is called oldserver. It is running wins, dns, AD and exchange. Also OWA and it also sends email to mobile devices aka cell phones. The oldserver roles are print sever , file server, exchange, AD . I need to move over AD and exchange to newserver. Newserver has to be a new domain.

oldserver domain is tele
newserver domain is smooth

the newserver domain smooth has to have exchange migrated over, users and profiles, AD . i have installed windows 2003 server on new server and named it smooth. it is currently in workgroup.

oldserver is domain tele and i need it to be just a file server .
i need to know how to go about setting new server up. i have never set one up where i would have to bring over users and public folders and security settings and OWA and exchange over

they dont want old server to log into anymore . when they log in and it has domain it says tele..

they want to log into new server with domain smooth.
i need help fast and was told my job is on the line with this. Any help and step by  step would be great. also i want to test this out on a few users rather than all . I need to move over mail, public folders ..securtiy, owa , profiles and dns and wins ...

it is not an easy task you have gotten. It has a few steps.

To export users use csvde command line tool, part of the resourcekit i think. ( or maybe built in)
Import them to the new domain.

To move mail: use exmerge, get it out to pst files and use exmerge to import it in on the other server.

Public folders: Not quite sure, but you can copy them  into an pst file from outlook. and then copy them back on the new server.

Profiles: windows profiles, is kinda easy. file copy of the original, and then copy them to the new one.

I have done this once, but it was from 5.5 to 2000. There might be an easier way to do it now...  But i do not know it yet....

Yes Arath, there is a MUCH easier way now... already in Version 3: use ADMT to migrate all Active Directory objects, in combination with Exmerge for the mailboxes.

Well, first of all, you MUST read the ADMT documentation.... any domain migration can get very complex very quickly.
Brief outline of the steps to take:
-On the new server:  Install DNS Server, and let it point to itself for DNS in Network TCP/IP properties.
-DCPromo the new server to create a new Forest and new Domain
-Enable DNS (conditional) forwarders between DNS server in the old- and new domains, so each can resolve every hostname/resource in the other domain.
-Set up a Trust relationship between the two domains.
-Install ADMT in the new domain.
-Export mailboxes old domain with Exmerge
-Migrate AD objects with ADMT
-Import mailboxes.

when i dcpromo it ..what role does it need to be ? like i said right now it is in a work group ..i have to run manager server and then i have to follow the prompts ...that is where i am sitting now

Oh boy....
start>control panel>add/remove programs>windows components > install DNS server
start>control panel>network>Network adapter>properties>TCP/IP> set the DNS server to your server's IP address.
start>run>dcpromo [enter]
Follow instructions to make it a domain controller for a new domain in a new forest, with your new domain name (smooth.local)
Then in the DNS console, configure forwarder for the old domain (tele) to your old DNS server (and vice versa)
Then in AD Domains and Trusts console, set up the trust relationship.

I hope this gets you started. I refer you to the online documentation and ADMT documentation for more detailled instructions, otherwise this could become a VERY long thread.

After the DCpromo your new domain is a single server domain, where this one server holds all FSMO roles.
You can add additional DC's and spread out the FSMO roles at any time.

well I am wanting to phase out the olld server ....this has all become about cause the company changed names and have to move from old server to new ..I am the person that fixes laptops and does all the other IT work ...and server i have little experience with ..so thank you ..but my work thinks i should know it all ...

when i dc promo then follow the instructions i will be able to have them log in after the ADMT ? and putting on exchange ?

i take it i move the mailboxes and public folders before i install exchange ..and old server I have to unistall it ?

want ot make some money lol

After all objects are migrated you can clean out the old environment, do not uninstall anything until the migration is complete.
You cannot migrate mailboxes before you've installed Exchange in the new enviroment obviously. You should completely configure and test it beforehand (Recipient policy, SMTP, anti-virus, anti-spam).

will i be able to use both servers side by side and just move a couple users over to the new server and have them test for awhile and then move the rest ....i will have almost identical IPs with same subnet and mask ...also i didnt understand this but I was told the server dont handle DHCP and dns and wins ? but i looked at old server and one of its roles is wins server and dns ...I know active directory runs on dns ..so curious on how i should work that out or just make a new dns and wins ?

also i can have exchange on both servers and running and everythign work out fine ? i would just move a couple over to the new server and have them authenticate and also use the mail ...using ADMT i see user profiles are saved is that correct ? so i wont have to backup there desktop  ?

Another x questions.......
If you migrate gradually, you will need to implement your security so that the users you have already migrated will still be able to access resources that are still in the old domain (and vice versa).
After you've set up a trust between the old and new domains, you will need to make the Global Groups from one domain member of Local Groups in the other domain.
You can move DHCP to the new at some time using this procedure: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325473/en-us . Then edit the scope options so the clients will use the new DNS server.
Don't even bother with WINS; it won't be necessery unless you still have NT4/9x on the network.
For DNS, follow the procedure from one of my earlier posts.

Exchange: yes, you can have both running at the same time; they are in different (NT) Domains, even if they are configured to process mail for the same (Internet) Domains. However, you can only let the Internet deliverr to ONE of them... this means at some point, you will have to switch over, and users from the old domain will no longer get new mail. They will need to be moved to the new domain OR their Outlook profile needs to be edited at that point. Plan this well, if this does not go smoothly, your head will be on the block!

ADMT: yes, user profiles are preserved. The ADMT Agent will translate all security on the workstations to reflect the new domain, and all should work. I will NEVER advise you won't have to backup; you should backup as much as possible as often as possible. :)
