asked on

slow internet speed

Hi!
We have recently installed sbs 2003 premium, we are connecting to the internet via a adsl modem and symantec gateway security 320. The internet spped is slow! - even on the server. I have adjusted the all the rules for inbound traffic to no avail.

Is it possible there is a dns problem?

Nslookup finds the server correctly, but the mx record query for mail only give a non-authorative reply.
Thanks in advance for your help

when you connect a laptop to the modem directly, are the speeds ok?

It could be the symantec too, perhaps you can try to find out if it's that box that could cause the slowdown.
If not we know it's the sbs server/domain, then we can delve into that one.

What kind of computer is it?  What's the CPU speed?  How much memory does it have?  A computer that's low on resources could make anything seem to slow.

Go into Task Manager and compare the Commit Memory to the Physical Memory.  If the commit is higher than the physical, the computer will be swapping and this could slow down some things significantly.

DNS and reverse-DNS resolution problems could also cause delays with Exchange Server and MX records.

Server running SBS 2003 premium
Proliant ML350 G5
Dual Processor
4GB RAM
2 Sets of Raid 1+0

The symantec box doesn't present a problem when laptop is connected, which would lead me to this that i have not set up the dns properly.

Try and NBTSTAT -AN and find out how much traffic you are generating, maybe Symantec is in a fit of updating.  See how much traffic is being generated on this network via this machine, Your hardware is definetly up to par.  I think you have a traffic issue.
Well, you x'd out information about your PRIVATE IP addresses which would not at all create a security issue because these are not routable on the Internet.  Therefore, I'm unable to help you resolve the problem.. unless you repost with full information.

I will again reiterate, this is in no way a risk to the security of your network.
