I can't actually see any errors in the above? the only thing the event log shows (Application log), at the same time as this is but may be coincidence:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Event: 1524
Windows cannot unload your classes registry file - it is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

Thought I'd post here as it might be a simple solution before I 'rip into it' :)

Anyone had any experience with the Microsoft User Profile Hive Cleanup Service (UPHClean) utility?
Docs seem to suggest this might be one avenue to explore.

No, it has nothing to do with the User Profile Hive.  That error is not related.

If you would have clicked on the link provided in the error log, you'd see that there information about, "The NTBackup log is blank" which is exactly what's happening here.

Follow the steps that are shown there, and if that doesn't work, please advise.

Yup, that works just click clicking 'backup now' works.
Reconfiguring the backup from the SBS GUI seems to make it work on that one occasion also but the second night it fails.
I did manage to catch the following error, "The library is unable to load the media at this time because the drive is in use"
I did also see RSM in the 'stopping' state once but I haven't seen that since. I've cleared the RSM database, doesn't seem to have had any effect either.
A quick update. Launching the backup now instantly fails. The RSM service shows as 'started'. I stopped the RSM service and retried and it worked... should the RSM service be running if the backup is not? I guess it's supposed to the terminate after the last job so the next job can use it?
Any more suggestions guys?
Sounds like a problem with your tape drive.  I'd suggest that you insted try backing up to a network share and see if that'll run two nights in a row.  If so, you know where the problem is.

Hi,

After a bit more snooping about, I have come across something...

If I open Computer Management, click on Removable Media > Libraries ... The tape drive listed here now has a red cross over it. If i restart the Removable Storage service, it goes away.. and I can backup fine again. After the SBS backup, it goes back to the red cross again.
