ADSIEdit suddenly stopped working, returning error "MMC cannot open the selected file"

I've been using ADSIedit on our Win2K/2K3 servers running active directory to be able to setup ftp users (such that they login to the specific folder, etc.)  All of a sudden, adsiedit doesn't work, returning the error when you try to start it of "MMC cannot open the selected file".  It sounds suspicious to me to hear me say this, given the problem, but I really didn't change permissions on anything recently, and I'm signing on to the server with admin users trying to run this.

Any ideas how to troubleshoot/solve this?

Try creating a new MMC

Start, run
MMC
Click file, Add/Remove Snap-in
click Add
Select ADSIedit and then click ADD
Then click close, then OK

If that doesn't work try re-installing the windows support tools from the 2003 CD.

Strongline,

ADSIedit is part of support tools, not the adminpak

Strongline,

Sorry, I guess it's in the adminpak as well.  Used to be a support tool thing

Thanks for the idea. When I open mmc, I only get a 'Console' and 'Help' option in the menu bar, although I recall a 'File' menu going back a few years.  Incidentally, this particular server is win2K.  I just tried another server in our a.d. domain, a win2k3 server, and adsiedit opened ok.

I tried using 'Console', 'open' and located the adsiedit.msc file, but I still get the same error as in my original post.  I also cleared the windows event viewer, tried opening adsi again and got the error, and looked in event viewer to see if it spiked an error, but nothing appeared :(

I might have to try reinstalling support tools, but might you have another suggestion in the meantime?
Thanks!

Re-install the adminpak as per strongline's suggestion, it will be up to date as opposed to the date support tools:

Well, that links to a page for the adminpak for server 2K3.  I mentioned in my last post that this particular server is running Win2K.  Is there an equivalent for Win2K?
